The Ian Potter Museum of Art is the University of Melbourne's main public gallery, holding the university's art collection — around 16,000 works spanning antiquities, Indigenous Australian art, Australian colonial painting, and contemporary commissions. The 1998 building by Nation Fender Katsalidis is itself a Carlton landmark, with a four-storey monumental façade dominated by an oversized colonnade.
The museum reopened in 2024 after a multi-year redevelopment. Admission is free; opening hours are limited (typically Tuesday to Sunday daytimes) and worth checking before visiting. A useful pairing with the Melbourne Museum on a day spent in the area.
