St Jude's Church

Bluestone Anglican parish church on Lygon Street, consecrated 1870

St Jude's Anglican Church on Lygon Street is one of the more imposing pieces of bluestone Gothic Revival in inner Melbourne, designed by Albert Purchas and consecrated in 1870. The church served the predominantly Anglo-Irish working population that lived in Carlton before the Italian wave, and its scale gives a clue to how busy the streets around it once were.

The interior — open to visitors during Sunday services and at occasional opening hours — is more modest than the exterior suggests, with timber roof trusses and a long nave under tall lancet windows. The bluestone is local, quarried from the nearby Footscray quarries.
