Geelong's Town Hall is the most imposing 19th-century civic building in the city — Classical Revival in style, faced in local bluestone with a freestone portico, fronting Johnstone Park. The original 1855 structure was extended in the 1880s as the city's wool wealth peaked, giving the building its current scale.
It is still used for council functions and concerts; the public foyer is usually open in business hours. The view across Johnstone Park to the gallery and the war memorial is one of the more dignified urban scenes in regional Victoria.
