Altona Beach is a long, clean sandy beach on the western side of Port Phillip Bay. It has a more local feel than Melbourne's better-known bay beaches, with space to spread out and easier parking than you will usually find closer to the centre.
It is best for a relaxed swim, a waterfront walk, or a low-key beach afternoon. Travellers based in central Melbourne should allow for the trip across the bay suburbs.
