Lock 11 is one of Mildura's easiest ways to get close to the Murray River as a working waterway rather than just a scenic backdrop. Boats rise and fall through the lock, while the adjacent weir controls water levels through this broad, slow reach of the river.
The short walk around Lock Island is the real pleasure. River red gums, birdlife, and changing views of the water make it a gentle hour outdoors, and the lock itself gives a useful glimpse of the engineering that made irrigation towns like Mildura possible. It is close enough to the centre to visit on foot or by bike.
