Fremantle Arts Centre

The Fremantle Arts Centre occupies a graceful Gothic limestone complex on a quiet hill ten minutes' walk north-east of the centre. It is one of the leading contemporary arts venues in Western Australia, with rotating exhibitions across several gallery spaces, a working artists' residency programme, a craft shop, and a courtyard café.

The summer Sunday concert series — free, on the lawn under the Moreton Bay figs — is a Fremantle institution and a calmer alternative to the South Terrace bars. The building alone, with its outer veranda and the play of light in the courtyard, repays a visit; the gardens are open at all hours.

A story
The building began life in 1864 as a lunatic asylum, built by convicts who were themselves often inmates. After closure as a hospital in 1909 it was variously a women's home, an American naval headquarters during WWII, and a technical college, before reopening as a contemporary arts centre in 1972 — the conversion that saved one of the finest convict-era buildings in the country.
