Fremantle Markets

The Fremantle Markets, on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street, are the social heart of the city at weekends. The Victorian market hall opens Friday to Sunday, with around 150 stalls of produce, baked goods, local cheese, hot food, crafts, vintage clothing, and the rest.

The atmosphere is the point. There is live music in the courtyard, a strong busker tradition outside, and a crowd that mixes locals doing the weekly shop with weekend visitors from Perth. Get there before 11 on Saturday for the best of the produce. The fish bar at the back is one of the more reliable lunches; the rooftop bar above offers a beer and a city view if the crowds become too much.

A story
The market opened in 1897 and has run continuously ever since under the same Victorian gabled roof. It closed for three years in the 1970s when the city tried to demolish it; a public outcry led by the local Greens founder Peter Murphy not only saved the building but also crystallised the campaign that turned Fremantle into the heritage-conscious city it is today.
