Koroyanitu National Heritage Park

Koroyanitu National Heritage Park covers the forested slopes of the Koroyanitu (Mount Evans) range directly behind Lautoka, rising to 1195 metres. The park is managed by the Abaca village community and offers guided day hikes and overnight stays in traditional village bures. The trails pass through montane rainforest to waterfalls, traditional fortification sites (koronivalu), and hilltop viewpoints that on clear days give views over the entire western coast of Viti Levu and across to the Yasawa islands.

The main trail to the summit takes around 5–6 hours return. A shorter waterfall walk takes 2–3 hours. Both require a guide arranged through the village — you cannot hike independently. Accommodation at Abaca village is available in simple bures; the experience of waking in a traditional Fijian village surrounded by forest, with the coast visible below, is exceptional and entirely uncommercialized compared to the resort strip at Nadi.

A story
The Abaca village community manages the park under a conservation agreement with the Fiji government — one of the earliest examples of community-based ecotourism management in the Pacific. The villagers serve as guides, maintain the trails, and receive most of the fee income directly. The arrangement has been running since the 1990s and is cited as a model for indigenous-led conservation across the region.
