Garden of the Sleeping Giant

The Garden of the Sleeping Giant (named after the mountain profile visible from the site) holds one of the finest collections of orchids in the Pacific — over 2,000 orchid varieties, originally assembled as a private collection by the American actor Raymond Burr. The garden covers about 50 acres and includes rainforest walks, lily ponds, and displays of both orchid species and hybrids.

Best visited in the morning before the heat builds. The orchid houses are the main draw — the variety of size, colour, and form in the collection is genuinely impressive. The adjacent Sabeto Hot Springs make a natural combination for a half-day excursion from Lautoka or Nadi.

A story
The garden was originally established by American actor Raymond Burr — best known for playing Perry Mason — who began collecting tropical orchids in the 1970s and bought land in the Sabeto Valley to cultivate them. After his death in 1993, the collection was acquired and expanded into the public garden it is today. Burr's personal orchid hybridisation records are kept in the garden archive.
