Sigatoka

Coral Coast market town on Viti Levu, beside dunes, river villages, and old hill forts.

Sigatoka is the main town on Fiji's Coral Coast, set where the Sigatoka River reaches the dry southwest shore of Viti Levu. It is not a resort town in the polished sense. The centre is busy, practical, and market-driven, with farmers from the valley selling the produce that gives the area its "Salad Bowl" nickname.

The town earns its place because the landscape around it is unusually varied for such a small area. Sigatoka Sand Dunes bring coastal archaeology and windy dune walks; Tavuni Hill Fort looks over the river from an old defensive ridge; and jet boats run inland to villages along the valley.

Use Sigatoka as the Coral Coast's day-trip town rather than a beach base. Come in the morning for the market, then choose either the dunes or the river valley before heading back to the coast.
