Parc Bougainville

A small triangular park on the waterfront, named for the French navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, who circumnavigated the globe in 1766–69 and dropped in on Tahiti in 1768, immediately after Wallis and a year before Cook. The park has a bust of Bougainville, two large anchors recovered from sunken ships, and a war memorial.

The shaded benches make it a useful break from the heat between the market and Place Vai'ete. The decommissioned ship's cannons here came from the French gunboat Zélée, sunk in Papeete harbour during the 1914 German naval bombardment of the town.
