Festivals

Yam Festival (February-April). The yam harvest is one of the most important events in the Kanak ceremonial calendar. Festivals are held across the territory, with the largest in Noumea in mid-April. Expect traditional dancing, music, markets, and community gatherings. This is a genuine window into Kanak culture, not a performance staged for tourists.

Avocado Festival, Maré (May). A three-day celebration on the island of Maré marking the end of the avocado harvest. Food, music, tours, and a relaxed island atmosphere.

Loyalty Islands Fair. This annual fair rotates between the three Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa), showcasing each island's culture through markets, fashion, traditional dancing, canoe races, and music. In 2025 the fair was hosted on Ouvéa.

Great Lagoon Regatta (June). An international sailing regatta that uses the lagoon as its course, stopping at remote islets with traditional food, dancing, and festivities at each anchorage. Combines sport with genuine cultural exchange.

Francofolies (September). A French-language music festival bringing together local and international acts, held in Noumea. The South Pacific outpost of the famous La Rochelle festival.

Bastille Day (14 July). Celebrated with a military parade and fireworks in Noumea, as in France. In some years and in some areas this date carries political tension; be aware of the context.

Whale watching season (June-September). Not a festival per se, but the arrival of humpback whales in the lagoon is something locals and visitors mark and celebrate. Various operators run dedicated whale-watching excursions.
