The main entry point is Noumea – La Tontouta International Airport (NOU), about 50 km north of the capital. Most international flights arrive here.
From Australia and New Zealand: The most direct connections. Aircalin (Air Caledonie International) and Qantas operate direct flights from Sydney and Brisbane; Air New Zealand connects from Auckland. Flight time from Sydney is around three hours.
From France and Europe: There is no nonstop flight from Europe. Most routes go via Sydney, Auckland, Tokyo, Singapore, or Bangkok, and typically involve one connection. Total journey time from Paris is 20-plus hours.
From Asia: Japan has direct connections via Tokyo (Aircalin). Other Asian cities connect via Sydney or Auckland.
By cruise: Noumea is a regular port of call on Pacific cruise itineraries out of Sydney and Brisbane.
Domestic connections: Aircalin also operates domestic routes from Noumea (Magenta Airport, closer to town) to the Loyalty Islands and Isle of Pines. Air Caledonie runs smaller inter-island flights. If you plan to visit the outer islands, book domestic legs well in advance, particularly in July-August and during school holidays.
Note on post-2024 situation: International flights resumed normal schedules after the 2024 unrest. La Tontouta operates normally. Check your airline's schedule if flying with smaller carriers that paused services during the disruption.
