Coal Creek Falls is a short forest walk north of Greymouth, ending at a broad curtain of water dropping into a dark pool. The track is easy by West Coast standards, passing through damp native bush where ferns, moss, and birdsong do much of the work before the waterfall appears.
It is a good choice when the weather is unsettled or you only have a couple of hours. The falls are not remote wilderness, but they give a quick taste of the wet, green landscape that defines this side of the South Island.
