The Southern Breakwater is a simple but satisfying Greymouth walk, running out toward the point where the Grey River meets the Tasman Sea. In rough weather the waves and river mouth show why this coast has always been difficult for shipping.
It is best treated as a short outdoor stop rather than a formal attraction. Bring a jacket, watch the conditions, and combine it with the floodwall, port area, or sunset on the beach.
