Monteith's has been brewing on the West Coast since 1868 and remains one of New Zealand's better-known craft labels. The current brewery and visitor centre, on the corner of Turumaha and Herbert Streets in central Greymouth, opened in 2011 — a glass-fronted modern facility built on the site of the original brewery.
The guided tour (about an hour, including tasting) is well organised and worth the time if it is raining, which on the West Coast is a reasonable assumption. The on-site bar serves the full range of beers plus a respectable food menu, and is one of the better evening spots in town.
