Getting There

By ferry

The most pleasant way to reach the North Shore from central Auckland. Fullers360 runs ferries from Downtown Ferry Terminal to Devonport (12 minutes, frequent daily service) and to Bayswater and Northcote Point on the inner harbour. The Devonport ferry is a proper commuter service and runs well into the evening. Ferries also connect to Birkenhead from the Downtown Terminal.

By road

The Auckland Harbour Bridge carries State Highway 1 across the Waitemata Harbour and is the main road link. The bridge is never far from congestion during peak hours — morning traffic flows into the city, evening traffic pours north. If you are driving, SH1 connects through the North Shore to Albany and beyond. Budget for tolls if you use the Northern Gateway or Orewa expressways further north.

By bus

The Northern Busway is the fast bus option — a dedicated bus lane runs alongside the motorway from Albany into the city, making it one of Auckland's more reliable public transport routes. The main stops are Albany, Constellation, Smales Farm, Akoranga, and then into the city centre. Buses run frequently during peak hours. Regular services also connect from Britomart station and the city centre to Takapuna and other North Shore suburbs.
