North Shore City

Auckland harbour suburb of Gulf-facing beaches, Devonport villas, and bush reserves across the bridge.

North Shore City sits across the Waitemata Harbour from Auckland's CBD, connected by the Harbour Bridge and a network of ferries. Once an independent city, it merged into Auckland Council in 2010 but retains its own character — quieter and more suburban than central Auckland, with long beaches facing the Hauraki Gulf and bush-clad reserves running along the coast.

Takapuna is the commercial heart, with a strip of cafes and bars running down Hurstmere Road to one of the best urban beaches on the North Shore. Devonport, at the southern tip, is a charming village with Victorian villas, a naval base, and panoramic views from the top of Mount Victoria. Further north, the East Coast Bays stretch from Browns Bay to Long Bay, offering sheltered swimming beaches and coastal walks.

The North Shore is a good base if you prefer being close to the water and away from the bustle of central Auckland, with the city just a short ferry ride across the harbour.
