The North Shore's appeal is largely outdoors — long sandy beaches facing the Hauraki Gulf, volcanic viewpoints, and coastal reserves that feel surprisingly wild given how close you are to New Zealand's largest city. Devonport, at the southern tip, is the most historic corner, with Victorian streetscapes and a pair of volcanic cones that reward a short climb with panoramic views across the harbour. Further north, the East Coast Bays stretch to Long Bay, where walking tracks take you through coastal forest above the sea.
