When to Go

Rotorua works year-round — the geothermal attractions are as good in winter as summer, and the town is active throughout the year. Summer (December–February) is the most popular time, with warm temperatures and long days. The lakes are swimmable and the outdoor activities at their best.

Winter (June–August) brings cool temperatures and occasional frost but rarely disrupts travel. The steam rising from vents and pools is more dramatic in cold air, which gives the landscape an extra ghostly quality. Mountain biking is popular year-round; the Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest trails are open in all weather.

Spring and autumn are good shoulder seasons — school holiday crowds are absent and prices drop. Rain can fall at any time of year; the North Island's west side gets more of it than the east. Pack layers regardless of season.
