Pencarrow Head has two lighthouses guarding the entrance to Wellington Harbour. The upper light, built in 1859, was New Zealand's first permanent lighthouse; the lower light was added in 1906 to help ships when fog hid the higher tower.
The site is a good target for a coastal walk or bike ride, with harbour, Cook Strait, and weather-beaten headland views.
