Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's second-largest wine region and one of its best, specialising in Bordeaux-style reds and Chardonnay from the warm, dry climate of the Heretaunga Plains. Cellar doors are clustered within cycling distance of Hastings: Sileni, Te Awa, Craggy Range, and Elephant Hill are among the most well-regarded, though there are dozens of smaller producers scattered through the valleys.
The most practical way to explore is by bike — the flat plains make cycling easy, and a one-day ride can take in four or five cellar doors without difficulty. Bike rental is available in Hastings and nearby Havelock North. Wine tours by minibus are also popular and remove the need to navigate. If you are driving yourself, designate a driver — the roads are scenic but the temptation to linger is considerable.
