Rush Munro's Ice Cream Garden

Rush Munro's is a Hastings institution: a family-run ice cream parlour that has been operating since 1926, making it one of the oldest continuously run ice cream businesses in New Zealand. The product is excellent — real dairy ice cream in a range of flavours, served in cones or cups and eaten in the shaded garden behind the shop.

The experience is refreshingly unpretentious. The garden has the relaxed atmosphere of a neighbourhood spot that has never needed to try too hard because people keep coming back. It is a reliable stop for families and a pleasant mid-afternoon break from wine touring. You will find it on Heretaunga Street near the town centre.

A story
Rush Munro's has been hand-making ice cream in Hastings since 1926 — nearly a century, through earthquakes, wars, and the entire history of New Zealand's modern food culture. The garden out the back, where you eat your ice cream at wooden tables under old trees, has changed very little since the 1950s.
