Getting Around

Napier's central city is compact and walkable. The Art Deco streets, Marine Parade, and Napier Hill are all within easy walking distance of each other. Ahuriri, the restaurant and bar neighbourhood, is a 20-minute walk north of the centre or a short taxi ride.

Cycling is the best way to explore the wider wine region. Several operators in the city rent bikes and provide route maps; the flat roads between Napier and the Gimblett Gravels wineries near Hastings are well suited to a day's cycling, especially with a planned lunch stop at a vineyard. Taxis and ride-shares are available and reasonably priced. For Cape Kidnappers, a tour is the practical choice — the beach route requires a tractor or a significant walk timed around tides.
