The Cape Brett Track is a serious two-day tramp that runs sixteen kilometres along the spine of the Cape Brett peninsula to a lighthouse at the eastern tip of the bay. The path climbs through coastal forest, descends into half a dozen bush-filled gullies, and breaks out onto cliff-top ridges with views back toward the inner bay and out to Piercy Island and the Hole in the Rock.
Most trampers stay overnight at the Cape Brett Hut, a 23-bunk Department of Conservation hut beside the old lighthouse keeper's quarters at the cape. Bookings are essential; the hut is often full in summer. A water taxi from Russell or Rawhiti can drop you at Deep Water Cove halfway along and let you walk one direction only. The track is exposed in places and not advised in poor weather.
