The bay's two best day trips are short ones — across to Russell on the passenger ferry, or twenty minutes north to Kerikeri for the Stone Store and the orchard country. Drivers with a full day can push further to Cape Reinga at the very tip of the North Island, or up to the Karikari Peninsula for empty beaches.
