Moturua Island

Moturua is the largest of the inner Bay of Islands and the easiest to land on if you want a half-day off the boat. A loop walking track of about three hours connects four sandy bays — Mangahawea, Hahangarua, Otupoho and Waiwhapuku — separated by low headlands of native bush. Pa sites (pre-European Maori fortifications) and shell middens are dotted along the ridges.

Most cruise operators run drop-off services that let you walk the loop and meet a boat at a different bay. The water at Otupoho is one of the best swimming spots in the bay, with a sheltered crescent of white sand. The island is part of a Department of Conservation-managed pest-free sanctuary, so check your bag and shoes for stowaways before landing — bellbirds, tui and the occasional saddleback are returning to the regenerating bush.
