Rawene

Small Hokianga harbour town with early colonial buildings, galleries, mangroves, and a working ferry.

Rawene sits on the south side of Hokianga Harbour, a small waterside town with more history than its size suggests. It is one of New Zealand's oldest European settlements, with timber churches, old commercial buildings, and Clendon House set along a quiet waterfront rather than arranged as a museum village.

The best reason to stop is the mix of harbour and local character. You can walk the mangrove boardwalk, visit Clendon House, browse a gallery or craft shop, and take the ferry across to Kohukohu for a wider look at the Hokianga. It is not a big-ticket destination, but it has a strong sense of place and makes a rewarding slow day if you are already travelling through Northland.
