The Waikato River flows through the heart of Hamilton and the riverside walkway runs for several kilometres along both banks, connecting the central city to the Hamilton Gardens in the south and Claudelands in the east. The path is flat, well-maintained, and popular with joggers, cyclists, and families at any time of day.
Several bridges cross the river within the city — the Victoria Bridge and the Claudelands Bridge are both worth crossing on foot for the river views. The river path is busiest on weekend mornings; if you want it quieter, go early or head to the stretches north of the city centre, which attract fewer people. Canoes and kayaks can be hired from operators near the gardens.
