Getting Around

Wanganui's centre is compact and walkable. The main sights — Durie Hill, the Sarjeant Gallery, Moutoa Gardens, the river — are all within 20 minutes of each other on foot. A car is useful for reaching the Whanganui River Road north of the city.

The Durie Hill elevator links the city centre to the hilltop suburb above, saving the walk for those who want the view without the climb. Local buses run but are infrequent; most visitors explore on foot or by bike.
