Knight's Point Lookout

Knight's Point is a roadside lookout on the coastal highway south of Haast where the mountains press so close to the sea that the road carves directly along the clifftop, and on rough days the spray from breaking waves reaches the tarmac. The view from the lookout platform takes in a wide crescent bay framed by bush-covered headlands, with the Tasman Sea unobstructed to the west and the Southern Alps immediately behind. There is a sign marking the spot where the road linking the West Coast to the south was finally completed in 1965 — before that, the only way through was by sea or over the mountains.

It is a short stop, but one of those places that makes you glad you went out of your way. New Zealand fur seals occasionally haul out on the rocks below, and the stretch of coastline in either direction is wild enough to feel genuinely remote even from a sealed highway.
