Abbey Caves

Three undeveloped limestone caves with glow-worms, 10 km from town

Abbey Caves Reserve protects three limestone caves — Organ Cave, Middle Cave, and Ivy Cave — about 10 kilometres east of Whangarei. Unusually for New Zealand, they are completely undeveloped: no guided tours, no electric lights, no concrete paths. You climb down on your own with a torch.

This makes them genuinely adventurous and not entirely safe — the streams flowing through can rise fast after rain and have caused fatalities. Check the weather, take strong torches, wear shoes that can get wet, and tell someone you are going. Glow-worms cover the cave ceilings in numbers rarely seen in commercial cave systems. A loop walk through the reserve takes about two hours and visits all three caves.

A story
The caves are essentially unmanaged — no guides, no lights, no railings. The only way to see the glow-worms properly is to wade through the cave streams with a torch, then switch the torch off and let the false sky overhead resolve itself into hundreds of tiny blue-green points of light.
