Working artists' studios in a former limestone quarry

The Quarry is a cooperative of working artists set in an old limestone quarry on the southwest edge of Whangarei. Around 30 artists have studios here — potters, painters, sculptors, weavers — set among the eccentric handmade buildings that have grown up over the site since the 1980s.

Most studios are open to the public and the artists are usually happy to chat about their work. There's a small gallery selling work from the collective and a cafe. It feels genuinely off the standard tourist circuit, which is part of the charm. Best on weekdays when more of the studios are likely to be staffed.
