Whangarei Falls

26-metre basalt waterfall with viewing platforms a few minutes from town

Whangarei Falls is a 26-metre drop on the Hatea River, set in a small reserve about ten minutes' drive north of the town centre. A short loop walk leads to viewing platforms at the top and a pool at the base, with native bush all around. It is often described as the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand — partly because of the basalt columns that frame the drop.

The full Hatea River walk from the Town Basin, via Mair Park and the Parihaka summit option, ends at the falls and is a satisfying half-day's exercise. If you just want a quick look, a small car park at the falls reserve puts you ten minutes from the viewing platform.

A story
The falls drop over a sheer face of columnar basalt — the same kind of hexagonal jointing you see at Giant's Causeway in Ireland — formed when ancient lava flows cooled and contracted. A short loop track lets you walk behind the falls in places when the river is low.
