Chinatown

Honiara's Chinatown, clustered around the main commercial street near the Central Market, is where the Solomon Islands' substantial Chinese community runs much of the city's retail trade. The neighbourhood is dense with hardware stores, general trading companies, restaurants, and mobile phone shops.

The area was badly damaged during riots in 2006 and again in 2021, when tensions around Chinese business dominance in the local economy boiled over. Much of it has been rebuilt. It is not conventionally a tourist area, but it is the commercial heart of Honiara and gives a clear picture of the ethnic and economic dynamics of the Pacific's most Chinese-influenced capital.
