Honiara is served by Honiara International Airport (HIR), also known as Henderson Field — a name that dates from the American wartime base built on the same site in 1942. Solomon Airlines flies to Brisbane, Nadi, Port Vila, and a handful of regional destinations. International connections are otherwise thin; most visitors route through Brisbane or Port Moresby.
Ferries connect Honiara to the outer islands, though schedules are irregular and the boats are basic. The main wharf is close to the centre of town. For the Western Province islands, flying with Solomon Airlines to Munda is faster and more reliable than the ferry.
