Almost all visitors fly into Bauerfield International Airport, six kilometres north of Port Vila. Air Vanuatu, Virgin Australia, Fiji Airways, and Solomon Airlines run direct services from Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland, Nadi, and Honiara. There is no domestic ferry that operates regularly between countries; the only realistic alternative is a cruise ship calling in Port Vila for a day.
For onward travel to the outer islands of Vanuatu, Air Vanuatu's small turboprops fly from Bauerfield to about 30 island airstrips, including Tanna (for the volcano) and Espiritu Santo (for the diving). Book ahead — flights are limited and frequently overbooked.
