Efate

Vanuatu's most populated island, ringed by reefs and centred on Port Vila's natural harbour.

Efate is the most populated island in Vanuatu and home to the capital, Port Vila. The island is ringed by coral reefs and dotted with coconut plantations, and its lush volcanic interior rises to over 600 metres.

Port Vila sits on a natural harbour on the southwest coast and serves as the country's commercial and tourism hub. The waterfront is lively, with markets, restaurants, and views across to tiny Iririki Island. Beyond town, the coastline opens up to quieter beaches, snorkelling spots, and traditional villages where kastom culture is still very much alive.

Most visitors to Vanuatu spend at least a few days on Efate. The island is small enough to drive around in half a day, but varied enough to fill several — from the underwater post office at Hideaway Island to the cascading Mele Cascades waterfall just outside town.
