Hideaway Island

Hideaway is a tiny coral islet a five-minute boat shuttle off the south coast at Mele Bay. The fringing reef is excellent for snorkelling — table corals, parrotfish, sea turtles if you are lucky — and the lagoon is calm and shallow enough for families.

The day-trip fee includes the shuttle and use of snorkel gear. There is a beach bar, a restaurant, and a low-key resort if you decide to stay. Get there early: the day-trippers arrive in waves from late morning.

A story
Hideaway is home to the world's only underwater post office: drop a waterproof postcard into a box three metres down on the reef and a snorkelling postie collects and franks it with a special embossed stamp. Around 30,000 cards have been mailed from the seabed since it opened in 2003.
