Mele Cascades

Mele Cascades is the easy headline attraction outside Port Vila — a series of turquoise pools tumbling down a wooded hillside about 10 kilometres west of town. You walk up a slippery path beside the water for about twenty minutes, swimming as you go, until you reach a wider plunge pool at the top.

It is touristy but genuinely beautiful, and the water is cool and clean. Bring reef shoes for the rocks and a waterproof bag for valuables. A modest entrance fee goes to the village; most tours from Port Vila include transfers.

A story
The cascades sit at the foot of a forested hill on land owned by the Mele Maat community, who were resettled here in 1951 after the volcanic eruption on Ambrym destroyed their original village. They still run the site.
