Independence Park

A grassy open space in central Port Vila where the country was officially handed over from joint British–French rule in July 1980. The Parliament of Vanuatu sits at one end and the Sacred Heart Cathedral at the other.

The park itself is unremarkable, but on Independence Day (30 July) it is the centre of the country's biggest celebrations, with traditional dancing, military parades, and a week of music. Stop by in the morning when the trees provide shade and locals come out to relax.
