Festivals

Gjirokastra National Folk Festival

Held every five years at the fortress of Gjirokastër, this is Albania's most important cultural event. About 1,000 folk artists from Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia perform traditional music, dance, and costume. The iso-polyphonic singing tradition — a UNESCO intangible heritage — is a highlight. The festival dates back to 1968. Check the Gjirokastra municipality website for the next scheduled edition.

Kala Festival

An electronic and underground music festival held each June on the beach at Dhërmi on the Albanian Riviera. Intimate by design, with six outdoor stages and a line-up that draws serious international acts. One of the more distinctive music festival experiences in the Balkans.

Tirana Jazz Festival

Held annually in Tirana, usually in October or November, bringing together Albanian and international jazz musicians. A good reason to be in the capital in autumn.

Dita e Verës (Summer Day)

Celebrated on 14 March, this pagan-rooted spring festival is particularly vivid in Elbasan, where the streets fill with food stalls, music, and people gathering outdoors after winter. It predates both Christianity and Islam in Albania.
