Bylis Archaeological Park

Hilltop Illyrian and Roman city ruins near Ballsh, with theatre remains and wide views over the Vjosa-Seman landscape.

Bylis Archaeological Park is one of southern Albania's strongest ancient sites, set on a high ridge near Ballsh rather than in the flatlands of Fier. The ruins belonged to the Illyrian city of Byllis and later Roman and Byzantine phases, with city walls, a theatre, basilicas, streets, and cisterns spread across a wind-open plateau.

The setting does half the work: from the site you look across the Middle Seman valley and toward the wider Fier landscape, so the ancient city reads as a strategic place rather than a scatter of stones. It pairs naturally with Apollonia for travellers who want more than one archaeological stop in the region, but Bylis is quieter and feels more exposed to the countryside around it.
