Fier

Southwestern Albanian city used as a base for Apolonia's ruins and the Monastery of Ardenica.

Fier is a mid-sized city in southwestern Albania, best known to travellers as the nearest town to the ancient ruins of Apolonia (about 12 km away) and the Monastery of Ardenica. The city itself is industrial and not a destination in its own right, but it is a practical base if you're combining visits to those two sites.

The ruins of Apolonia — an ancient Greek and Roman city that Augustus Caesar used as a base — contain a well-preserved odeum, stoa, and a monastery museum. It is one of Albania's finest archaeological sites and should not be missed if you are passing through.

Buses and furgons connect Fier to Tirana (about 2 hours), Vlore, and Berat.

Guide

Getting There

Fier is easily reached from Tirana (about 2 hours by bus or furgon), from Vlora (about 1 hour), and from Berat (about 1.5 hours). Buses and shared minivans (furgons) run frequently on all these routes from early morning. Fier's bus station is in the centre of town.

Fier sits on the main Tirana–Vlora highway (SH4) and is easy to reach by car. It is often used as a lunch stop or overnight break on a drive down the Albanian Riviera.
