Fier Mosque

The Fier Mosque — officially the Mosque of Fier — is the main Ottoman-era mosque in the city, recently restored after decades of neglect during the communist period when all religious buildings were closed and often vandalized. The mosque has a single minaret and a simple whitewashed interior that is characteristic of the Bektashi and Sunni architectural tradition found across southern Albania.

After the fall of communism in 1991, Albania's mosques were gradually reopened and restored, and the Fier Mosque is now an active place of worship. For travellers, it is worth a brief visit as an example of the Ottoman heritage that runs through this part of Albania — a reminder that this was Illyrian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman territory in succession.
