Fier's Ship House

In the outskirts of Fier stands one of Albania's most unusual buildings: a large multi-storey residential block built in the shape of a ship, complete with a bow, porthole windows, and what appears to be a superstructure on the upper levels. It was constructed during the communist era and is a reminder of the ambition and eccentricity that sometimes characterised socialist architecture.

The Ship House is not signed or officially promoted — Albanians know it but it gets no tourist attention. That is part of its appeal. Finding it requires asking locals or a brief detour from the main road north of the city centre. It is still inhabited and from the outside is genuinely startling. Drive or walk past, have a look, and continue on your way.
