Mehmet Shehu's Birthplace

The village of Corrush is the birthplace of Mehmet Shehu, who served as Prime Minister of Albania from 1954 to 1981 under the Hoxha dictatorship. His family home still stands in the village, though it is not marked or maintained as a historic site. Visiting requires asking local residents for directions.

Shehu was one of the most feared men in Albania during the communist period, overseeing the secret police and internal security apparatus. He had fought with the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War and led Albanian Partisan forces during World War II before rising to become Hoxha's right-hand man. His sudden fall from power and mysterious death at the end of 1981 remains one of the more opaque episodes of Albanian communist history.

A story
Mehmet Shehu served as Prime Minister of Albania for nearly three decades under Enver Hoxha, making him one of the most powerful figures in one of Europe's most secretive regimes. His death in December 1981 was announced as suicide, but the truth remains disputed — Hoxha later accused him of being a triple agent working for Yugoslavia, the CIA, and the KGB, claims widely regarded as fabrications used to eliminate a rival.
