Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable seasons for visiting the Mallakastër region. Temperatures are mild, the olive groves and hillsides are green, and the light in the valley is particularly good. Wildflowers cover the hillsides in April and May.
Summer is hot and dry, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C in July and August. The landscape becomes parched and brown, and the Vjosa river drops to a fraction of its winter volume. That said, summer is also when the Vjosa is most swimmable.
Winter is mild by Balkan standards but can be rainy and grey. Roads in the area can become difficult after heavy rain.
