The hillsides around Corrush are covered in ancient olive groves, many with trees that are centuries old. Olive cultivation has been the economic backbone of the Mallakastër district for generations, and the gnarled, silver-leafed trees give the landscape much of its distinctive character. Walking through the groves in autumn, when the olives are being harvested, offers a close look at agricultural life that has changed little in its essentials. The local olive oil is pressed at small mills in the district and has a robust, slightly bitter character typical of southern Albanian olives.
