A UNESCO site on a wooded peninsula 18 kilometres south of Saranda — one of the most complete ancient cities in the Balkans. Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian remains, all on one short walking loop: the amphitheatre, the basilica, the baptistery mosaic (usually covered for protection), the Venetian triangular fortress on the hill. An archaeological park in a national park — set aside three hours.
Butrint
UNESCO ancient city with Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian remains
A story
Virgil writes in the Aeneid that Butrint was founded by refugees from Troy. Archaeology has found nothing Trojan, but the Greek amphitheatre, Roman forum, 6th-century baptistery, and Venetian triangle fortress all make the layered case for Virgil's instinct.
